Yes She Can! The Power of Role Models
One of my good friends got married recently and her bridal shower
served
as a great opportunity for me to thank her for being a powerful role
model. Although we went to middle school and high school in Nigeria
together it wasn't until we graduated that she had the most significant
impact in my life. Her departure to the US for college gave me the
confidence to apply to school and courage to attend college in Boston
thousands of miles away from home. Years later she encouraged me to
apply to Harvard Business School where she was a 1st year student.
I know for a fact that I am much better off for having her in my life.
This is what the Washington Working Women's Forum
is all about. We chose the theme "Yes She Can!" to attest to the power
of role models. There is nothing more inspiring than seeing someone do
what you may have deemed impossible and now view through a more
probable lens. Learning from women who have gone before you and
sharing with women who are in the same situation you are in is both
comforting and empowering.
Come to the forum and be inspired by Marissa Levin
who at one moment drops her son off at summer camp and the next moment
is at the helm of a company that has been described as the small
business success story of the year. Come and be motivated by Kathy Korman Frey who has collected amazing stories of her "Hotmommas",
women who have built amazing businesses while raising their families.
Come and be energized by those at the forefront of the work life
movement and learn about the advances in work life balance even in this
economic climate. Come and be encouraged by attendees, women
passionate about excelling personally and professionally many of whom
have reached out to me to let me know that they are willing to help out
in any way to ensure the success of the forum.
Come and be empowered. Together we can create the movement that will make Work Life Balance a Reality!

Alicia Anderson, the founder and CEO of Attaché Services, knew how it felt to need
balance. She is 33, a mother of three, a MIT-trained MBA, wife of a
Harvard trained chemist, and a former general manager in a
predominantly male operations department of a Fortune 100
telecommunications company. Her ambitions landed her in a demanding
role, wondering if that was really where she wanted to be. With one
black high-heeled pump in the office and the other in the kitchen, she
was straddling the fence - trying to maintain superwoman status in
corporate America and at home. She left her six-figure, corporate role
in order to dedicate herself full time to helping women find balance
and personal fulfillment.
