The months of April and May were demanding for me on the home front. I went through a serious test of faith and it got me thinking why some women actually wait much later when they feel 'safe' in their career to have children. My two munchkins went through bouts of ear infections, bronchitis, and strep throat. Their bodies became testing grounds for different kinds of antibiotics other than amoxicillin. My 3 year old daughter had just started pre-school in April. A week later, came home with a cold. Her brother caught it and it ended up becoming a terrible ear infection for both ears. I'll spare you the details of the sleepless nights and countless visits to their PCPs within those 2 months. It took a toll on my health as well. My compassionate boss suggested I take a week of sick leave from the days I accrued. While going through this ordeal, I kept asking myself if it was feasible to be an I-banker, a consultant or associate at a law firm and still be employed after my children's health issue. I look at some of my friends who do not have children but in demanding careers tell me they cannot afford to have children now in order to stay relevant at their places of work. As far as they are concerned, children can be a distraction. My former employer grew very impatient with me once I became a mother. Before I called it quit, my last assignment was over 600 miles away from Boston and I had to be away 5 days of the week. Ladies, I need your input. How do you do it? Toyin (www.btpublishinghouse.com)

I am actually almost in the same boat. I'm getting to the point where I don't think we can have it all. Some things have to give especially if we want to raise up healthy kids with good values. I practically don't have any more vacation left and the summer is going to go by without me spending anytime with the kids. Forget during the week beacuse it takes me an hour to get to work and 1 1/2 to get back home. In this kind of situation write down what you want your life to really be like and start taking little steps to get there. Ask about other options at your job or look for something else.
